Dependence

I’ve heard people talk a lot about their dependence on material goods and services. Our dependence on cars, on fuel, on TV, on cellphones. But you never really notice the basic essentials of day-to-day and of working life until they are gone.

We have not had internet for a while now. Then we got internet, but it only works on the main computer. We were promised yesterday that it would be fixed, but I’ve been promised that since January 12th, so I wasn’t too hopeful.

The power went off in Dedza this morning (pretty much a daily occurance here), so I walked to work as usual, hoping that it would be restored in good time. No such luck.

But not only was the power out, so was running water!

And so, with no water, no power and no internet, I did the only thing left to do and flipped open a book and got down to reading.

Now, power, water and snail-esque internet restored, I can send you this note.

It made me realize, yet again, that you never realize how dependent you are until whatever you depend on gets removed, without warning or explaination, and then how much easier life and work is when all is restored.

Hello, Colleen! Finally got around to commenting on your blogs: I agree about reliance, but it’s amazing how many things you can do without, in a pinch, and get on with life. It’s also amazing how flexible we are when necessary (your living circumstances would be a good example!) without us knowing it. It’s only when we’re tested that we realize it.
    Cheers until next time.
